FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

THE ART OF SUGARING

YOUR HAIR

  • For silky legs and a smooth back, aim for every 4-6 weeks. Intimate areas and your face? Every 5 weeks works best. Underarms? Try every 2-3 weeks. Different areas, different rhythms. Tune into your body’s rhythm and keep your skin on point.

  • Regular sugaring, every 2 to 5 weeks, zeroes in on the anagen phase for closer-to-permanent hair reduction. Over time, follicles shrink and hair becomes finer. Stick to your routine for less regrowth and longer breaks between sessions.

  • The anagen phase is the crucial stage of the hair growth cycle when hair is actively growing. Sugaring hits its sweet spot here as the hair is fully rooted in the follicle, making for a smoother, more efficient removal.

  • Yes, sugaring typically lasts longer than waxing. It removes hair in the natural direction of growth, pulling it from the root for slower regrowth and smoother skin. Waxing pulls against the grain, so sometimes hair breaks off instead of being fully removed. With sugaring, you’re looking at a solid 3 to 6 weeks of smoothness, with hair returning finer and softer. It’s a win for your skin.

  • No. When people say they experience more hair growth after sugaring, it can be due to a few factors, including:

    1. Initial Reaction: After the first treatments, hair can appear thicker or coarser as it transitions from its previous growth cycle, especially if they have switched from shaving to sugaring.

    2. Hair Growth Cycles: Hair grows in cycles, with different hairs being in different phases (anagen, catagen, and telogen) at any given time. When you start sugaring, it can bring more hair into the anagen phase for removal, leading to the appearance of more hair growing back in a shorter time.

    3. Inconsistent Treatments: If appointments are spaced too far apart, hair can grow back to varying lengths and thicknesses. This inconsistency can give the illusion of increased hair growth.

    4. Comparison with Other Methods: People coming from shaving might find that sugaring feels different. Shaved hair often feels stubbly and coarse, while sugared hair can grow back softer. The perception of “more” hair might stem from the difference in texture rather than actual density.

    5. Individual Patterns: Each person’s hair growth pattern is unique. Some may naturally experience an increase in hair growth due to hormonal changes or other factors unrelated to sugaring.

In summary, while sugaring does not increase hair growth, individual experiences can vary based on several factors. Over time, with consistent treatments, many find that hair becomes finer and less dense.

YOUR SKIN

  • Sugaring is kind to all skin types. Our sugar paste, made from sugar and water, takes off dead skin cells and hair while keeping your live skin safe. Just let us know if your skin’s sensitive, and we’ll make sure your treatment is tailored to you.

  • Most clients find sugaring reduces ingrown hairs compared to waxing and shaving. It pulls hair in the direction of growth, minimising breakage and smoothing your skin. If ingrown hairs are a concern, feel free to let us know so we can customised aftercare instructions for you.

  • If you’re on medication, consult your physician before booking to make sure your skin’s ready for sugaring. Some meds can alter your skin, increasing the risk of tearing and irritation.

  • Topical treatments like Retin-A or Differin can make your skin more sensitive. We recommend waiting at least three months after discontinuing these products before sugaring to avoid irritation.

  • Sugaring isn’t suitable for those on isotretinoin (like Accutane) due to skin thinning and dryness, increasing the risk of permanent damage with epilation. Wait 3 to 6 months after stopping these meds and consider a patch test to ensure your skin’s up for it.

YOUR BODY

  • As long as you’re using a period cup or a fresh tampon. Let us know if Aunt Flo’s in town. Sensitivity might be heightened, but we’ll make sure you’re comfortable.

  • Sugaring is generally less painful than waxing. The sugar paste sticks only to the hair, not the skin, causing less irritation. It also removes hair in the direction of growth, reducing tugging. While pain tolerance varies, many find sugaring to be a gentler experience overall.

  • Enjoy sugaring with our natural sugar paste if you’re past your first trimester and no later than a week before your estimated due date. Consult your gynaecologist before booking, and if you’re in your first trimester, a signed waiver is needed. Sugaring is generally safe, but hormonal shifts might make your skin more sensitive. Keep us in the loop about your condition to ensure a smooth experience.

  • We recommend waiting 1 to 3 months after a natural birth or 3 to 6 months after a caesarean before scheduling a session. Your recovery timeline and your gynaecologist’s advice will guide you. With written approval from your gynae (for under 1 month post-natural or under 3 months post-caesarean), you’re set to book. We might suggest a longer wait to ensure your skin and any healing areas aren’t stressed. Consultations are available if needed.

BRAZILIAN & BEYOND

WHAT’S WHAT?

  • Refer to the diagram below for our “zoning” standards. Pink marks where we’re all about that hair removal, and green shows the zones we leave untouched. If you have specific preferences or need something more tailored, chat with your sugarist for a personalised approach.

  • Check out our facial “zoning” diagram below. For sensitive areas like your jawline, and sometimes your upper and lower lip, a patch test is recommended to identify if you might experience any histamine reactions. We will usually adjust based on your unique facial proportions and preferences.

YOUR SUGARING RITUAL

READY, SET, SUGAR: WHAT TO DO BEFORE

  • For that flawless finish, aim for your hair to be around 3mm long – think the size of a grain of rice. If it’s a tad longer, no sweat. We’ll take care of trimming it to the perfect length. If you’re currently shaving, let your hair grow for 10-14 days before your appointment.

  • To ensure your session goes off without a hitch, exfoliate your skin at least 2 days prior but skip it the day before, the day of, and the day after. Avoid lotions, creams, and oils on the treatment area, and skip deodorant if you’re getting your underarms done. Shower before you come in to keep your skin clean, but keep it bare of lotions and oils.

  • Hold off on intense workouts or yoga right before your appointment. Exercise ramps up blood flow, making your skin more sensitive and potentially increasing discomfort. Chill out and let your body cool down for the best sugaring experience.

  • A little discomfort is normal, especially if it’s your first time or if you’re sensitive to pain. Sugaring pulls hair from the root, so it can be intense. To ease the sting, consider taking ibuprofen about 30 minutes before your session. And if you’re on your period, it’s best to schedule your session a bit earlier. Need a break? Just let us know – we’re here to make sure you’re comfortable.

IN THE MOMENT: WHAT TO EXPECT DURING SUGARING

  • Occasionally, you might see a few small blood spots if capillaries rupture slightly during sugaring. This can happen, especially if your skin is sensitive or the hair is coarse. Generally, it’s nothing to fret about. But if you notice anything unusual or excessive, let us know right away.

  • If you’re feeling overwhelmed or uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to let us know. We’re all about your comfort, so you can definitely take a break to catch your breath and feel more at ease. We’ve got your back.

FRESHLY SUGARED: HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SKIN

  • To keep your skin glowing, avoid heavy workouts, yoga, and tight clothing for a solid 48 hours. Also, skip abrasive exfoliants like loofahs, chemical peels, tanning, swimming, spas, sexual activity, hot tubs, and anything that generates heat. This helps prevent irritation and keeps your skin smooth and healthy.

  • It’s pretty normal to experience some bumps or redness if it’s your first time or if it’s been a while. This isn’t usually a sign of an allergy – true allergies are rare. Reactions usually settle down in 48-72 hours. To help your skin recover, steer clear of heat and comedogenic products, and try not to pick. A patch test is a good idea for sensitive areas like your face or back.

  • To keep your skin in prime condition, steer clear of shaving between sugaring sessions. Shaving can lead to ingrown hairs and disrupt the smooth finish we’re aiming for due to the coarser texture of regrown hair. Stick with regular sugaring for consistent, smooth results, especially in areas where hair grows in different directions, like around the perineum and labia.

  • Not giving advice here, but it’s best to hit pause for at least 24 to 48 hours. Your freshly sugared skin may be more sensitive, and things like sweat and bacteria can spark irritation or even lead to ingrown hairs. Give yourself and your skin some downtime – it’ll thank you.

  • It’s a good idea to steer clear of sunbathing or tanning right after your session. UV exposure can ramp up your skin’s sensitivity, and since sugaring might make your skin a bit more delicate, it’s best to avoid the sun for 24 to 48 hours before and after your appointment. Keep it cool and let your skin chill.
